Siemens wins toll collection, traffic contract Bangkok

Munich, Germany – The Industrial Solutions & Services Group (I&S) has received an order from the Expressway & Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (ETA) to install toll collection, traffic control, and communication systems for the Ramindra Outer Ring Project in Bangkok, Thailand. The order is worth about 6.3 million euros, and the completion of the project is expected by the end of 2008.

The Ramindra Outer Ring project from ETA will expand the expressway network in the northeast of Bangkok and its vicinity. The new expressway extends over a total length of 9.5 km. It will mitigate the traffic congestion on the ground level, and facilitate the transportation flow on the northeast side of Bangkok.

To improve the flow of traffic and thus to reduce traffic congestion, Siemens I&S will provide a comprehensive toll collection and traffic control system as well as a communication system. The scope of delivery includes a traffic computer, variable message signs and CCTV video camera system (closed circuit television) plus all associated infrastructure such as an emergency telephone system and fiber optic communication. An innovative communication system will transmit the data to the central traffic computer for further analysis. The latest generation of traffic management systems for highways Sitraffic from Siemens I&S will integrate all information from the subsystem and provide graphic mapping display at the control center building to simulate the expressway route and to display the location and status of various equipment. Information on the traffic situation will then be generated and passed on to car drivers with variable message signs and information panels, which can be easily seen and understood. Road users will therefore be able to obtain an overview of the general traffic situation on the ring before they enter the expressway and will thus be able to adapt their route accordingly.
