Alstom to provide automated system Shanghai metro

Patrick Kron, Chairman and CEO of Alstom, and Minghong Ying, Chairman of Shanghai Shentong Holdings, signed on 27 November 2007 in Shanghai, China, a contract for the supply of a transit control system for line 10 of Shanghai metro, in presence of Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the French Republic.

The consortium made up of Alstom and its partner, CASCO Signal Ltd., is to supply to the operator Shanghai Shentong Holdings Group the fully automated system for line 10 of Shanghai metro being constructed ahead of the 2010 Universal Exhibition. The contract, worth a total of €43 million including €32 million for Alstom, takes in the design, manufacture, installation and putting into service of the Alstom Urbalis fully automated train control system.

Line 10 will be 36 kilometres long and will link the district of New Jiangwan Town, in the north of the city, with Hongqiao airport, to the south east of Shanghai. It will serve 31 stations. This will be the first fully automatic, high-capacity metro line to be opened in China.

Alstom and its partner, CASCO, will equip the line with Urbalis, a mass transit control system that integrates a CBTC based on the state-of-the-art communications and radio network. This innovative and reliable solution increases mass transit lines capacity by allowing short headways between trains, while guaranteeing maximum safety for passengers. Delivery of the system is planned for December 2010. Besides this contract, Alstom Transport and its Chinese partner Puzhen have been awarded last August a contract for the delivery, by end of 2010, of 246 metro cars for Line 10.

In fulfilling these contracts, Alstom Transport will draw on its expertise in the domain of urban transport and, in particular, metro systems. Since 1998, Alstom has been constructing and equipping the Singapore metro, the largest automatic metro in the world. In 2003, the company was awarded the contract for the automatic metro in Lausanne. In China, Alstom is to supply the train control system for line 2 of the Beijing metro, which will serve the installations for the 2008 Olympic Games. Jointly with Puzhen and SATCO, Alstom has also received orders for over 1,000 Metropolis cars, including six lines of the Shanghai metro network, as well as the Nanjing metro network. One in four metros currently operating across the world is an Alstom metro.
