Seminar: Trespassers on railway lines and suicides

The European Railway Agency is holding a seminar on trespasser fatalities on railway lines and suicides on 3 April 2008 in Lille, France.

The large majority of fatalities in railway accidents are related to persons hit by rolling stock in motion: 68% in the period 2004-2006 (source: Eurostat database, November 2007). Almost all fatalities classified under this type are related to unauthorised persons in railway premises (trespassers). In addition, official data on suicides on railway premises are available for the first time this year in the annual reports of the National Safety Authorities (Directive 2004/49).

Suicides, which are not classified as railway accidents, are of a similar order of magnitude as trespasser fatalities.

"The aim of the seminar is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge on policies at national level, reporting systems, causes analysis, cooperation between railways and other organisations/authorities, applied measures and their effectiveness as well as on the recent research on the subjects," explains Anders Lundström, Head of the European Railway Agency’s Safety Unit. "The seminar will be attended by National Safety Authorities, Investigation Bodies and Sector Organisations."
