Siemens equipment for Cable Liner Shuttle Las Vegas

Erlangen, Germany – Doppelmayr Cable Car GmbH, Wolfurt, Austria, has awarded the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) an order to supply the electrical equipment for a new Cable Liner Shuttle in Las Vegas. The final customer is the MGM Mirage Group, one of the world’s largest operators of hotels and casinos. At the end of 2009, the Cable Liner Shuttle will connect the new “City Center” to two casinos. It is the second transport system of this kind in Las Vegas as MGM Mirage has been operating a comparable system there since 1999. The “Mandalay Bay Tram”, as the existing system is called, was also supplied by Doppelmayr and Siemens. The volume of the new order is around eight million euros.

The Cable Liner Shuttle – a joint development by Doppelmayr and Siemens – is a fully automated, cable-hauled rapid transit passenger system. In Las Vegas, a 650 meter-long route will connect two casinos, namely the “Monte Carlo” and the “Bellagio”, with an intermediate stop in the “City Center”. To this end, two shuttle trains will be used, each of which can hold up to 128 people. This means that the system will be able to carry around 3,000 people per hour and direction. At a speed of 28 kilometers per hour, the traveling time will amount to around two minutes. The I&S business unit for cable-hauled “automatic people mover” systems with headquarters in Innsbruck, Austria, is supplying all the power supply equipment, the drive systems and the automatic train control system. It is also responsible for engineering, installation and commissioning.

Apart from the “Mandalay Bay Tram” in Las Vegas, Siemens has already equipped two automatic people movers (APMs) at the international airports in Birmingham and Toronto. A further project at the international airport of Mexico City is currently in the execution phase.

At the moment, MGM Mirage is building a new city district covering an area of 27 hectares in the heart of Las Vegas. The “City Center” project includes a hotel with 4,000 rooms plus casino extension as well as three specialized 400-room boutique hotels, a residential facility with 1,650 luxury owner-occupied apartments and almost 50,000 square meters for shops, restaurants and entertainment. Siemens is a partner in the project and, in summer 2005, received an order worth 100 million US dollars from MGM Mirage to supply and install numerous items of equipment and systems.
