Alstom to supply regional trains to Sweden

Alstom signs 27,5 million euro order in Sweden to supply 5 Coradia Nordic regional trains

Saint Ouen, France – Östgötatrafiken, the public transport operator in southern Sweden’s Östergötland region, signed an order with Alstom to supply Coradia Nordic regional trains. The order is worth a total of about 27,5 million euro and will see 5 trains delivered, with an option of 10 trains. Delivery of the trains is scheduled for the second half of 2009.

Coradia Nordic for Östgötatrafiken is a four-car articulated EMU (Electric Multiple Unit). The trains will be designed and assembled at Alstom site in Salzgitter, Germany, while the ONIX traction system will be manufactured in Tarbes, France. By purchasing the new trains, Östgötatrafiken will improve and update its regional train fleet. The new trains will mean increased comfort for passengers, with improved accessibility thanks to lower floors with a no-step design. What’s more, Coradia Nordic trains are up to 95% recyclable, in line with Alstom’s environmental policy.

The order is the third for Coradia Nordic in Sweden, with the first batch of trains for Greater Stockholm in service since August 2005. In total, Alstom will supply 71 trains to SL (Stockholm public transport operator), last delivery planned in May 2008. The second next is the order for Skånetrafiken of 49 regional trains, signed December 2006, first delivery in summer 2010 and service planned to start by the end of the year.

Since the first contract in 2002, Alstom has sold 243 of Coradia Lirex trains in Europe, including this new order. It confirms the success of these trains, where the Nordic version is specially designed for extreme winter weather conditions.
