Bombardier Signs $43 Million US Contract for Additional Work On The Airport People Mover System in Las Vegas, USA

Montréal, Canada – Bombardier Transportation has signed a contract with the Clark County Department of Aviation for new vehicles and rehabilitation of the two existing Automated People Mover (APM) shuttle systems at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada. The contract is valued at approximately $43 million US. It includes the supply of ten Bombardier CX-100 vehicles and upgrades to some of the electrical and mechanical equipment on shuttle legs C and D. The APM vehicles will be delivered between 2008 and 2009.

Bombardier Transportation’s facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will be responsible for the design and supply of the ten driverless vehicles. They will replace the Airport’s existing fleet, as well as modernize the automatic train control, communications and power supply and distribution systems. This work is in addition to the contract awarded to Bombardier in June 2006 for six new CX-100 vehicles and an underground shuttle system that is scheduled to connect Terminal 3 with the existing D-gate concourse in January 2011. All CX-100 vehicles will incorporate new features, such as on-board security cameras and flight information displays.

Bombardier has supplied and maintained the shuttle systems at the Airport since the first system, leg C, opened in 1985, which has already surpassed one million miles of service. The second system, leg D, opened in 1998. The overall system has consistently surpassed the contract availability target of 99.65 per cent.

Raymond T. Betler, President of Bombardier Transportation, Total Transit Systems, said, "As the supplier of choice to McCarran Airport for transit system equipment and maintenance services, this contract exemplifies the value that we and the Airport place on the range of services we provide and of our 20-year relationship. He added, “The exceptional operational flexibility of the CX-100 technology will permit the efficient introduction of new cars and upgrade of major subsystems with minimum disruption to passenger service.”

With 35 years of experience in designing, building and operating APM systems around the world, Bombardier Transportation has supplied APM systems for other airport and urban applications in Frankfurt, Germany; Rome, Italy; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore; Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Miami, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Seattle-Tacoma, Tampa, and San Francisco, USA. It is currently implementing a CX-100 system for Beijing Capital International Airport in China and a Bombardier Innovia APM for Heathrow International Airport in the United Kingdom.

The Bombardier Transportation Group has its global headquarters in Berlin, Germany, with a presence in over 60 countries. It has an installed base of approximately 97,000 vehicles worldwide. The Group offers the broadest product portfolio and is recognized as the leader in the global rail sector.
