Shunting

Shunting involves the movement of locomotives and wagons. This is carried out at shunting yards, stations and rail yards. The shunting process includes:

• the sorting of wagons

• the run around of a locomotive

• storage siding (A track which is used for short or longer periods to park trains. A storage siding usually doesn’t involve loading and unloading of cargo);

• the relocation of wagons

• composing a train

• adding of carriages or wagons
